1) AFRIBEMBÉ FESTIVAL: Black to the Future!
Enjoy a day-long celebration of Pan-African artistry and musicality on Saturday, August 12, from the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute, in partnership with the Friends of Harlem Art Park Alliance and the National Jazz Museum in Harlem.
This year’s event is titled Afribembé Festival: Black to the Future, with a focus on elevating Afrofuturism from a global diasporic lens with Africa at the center. The free daylong event runs from 12 pm — 6 pm at the Harlem Art Park and on E 120th Street between Lexington and Third Avenues.

2) Summer Street NYC
Summer Streets is the epic NYC tradition that opens up miles of thoroughfares for walkers, runners, bicyclists and people-watchers of all ages — and it’s back this weekend! Summer Streets takes place on Saturdays, August 12, 19, and 26, from 7 am to 1 pm. It’s in Manhattan on August 12 and 19; and Brooklyn and The Bronx on August 26. It’s free for all to walk, run, play and bike throughout the Summer Street closures, and there are typically themed rest stops with food and entertainment along the route.

5) Battery Dance Festival 2023
This summer, the free annual Battery Dance Festival moves from its usual perch at Robert F. Wagner Park (which is currently being reconstructed) to a spot on the North Esplanade of Rockefeller Park. But the week-long event still offers a chance to see dozens of companies from around the world performing outdoors near the sparkling water at sunset — or, if you can’t make it in person, to stream the performances live online.
The lineup for the 42nd edition features multiple U.S. or world premieres, and the participating artists include visitors from India, Indonesia, Romania, Canada, Norway, and Curaçao. Among the programs are slates devoted to young choreographers and India Independence Day. All seven shows are general admission, and there’s a rain date on Saturday, August 19.

8) Indian Independence Day Sound And Salt Walk
In celebration of Indian Independence Day (Aug 15th), Akṣarā in collaboration with NEXT.cc, will be organizing a 2 hr cultural walk inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi/Salt March. The walk will be filled with activities that will help one connect with the history of India, New York, and the surroundings filled with sound and salt.
Drape your independence through your own style of dressing in traditional Indian wear that is preferably Khadi or 100% cotton. This is in support of Mahatma Gandhi’s initiative for the hand-made. The cityscape along the Hudson River Park will give you ample opportunities to take some amazing pictures!
